October may be my favorite month to tell people about Arizona.
The desert begins to breathe again.
The temperatures become more comfortable. The mountains start showing their fall colors. Families head to pumpkin patches. Festivals fill communities across the state. And Arizona’s restaurants, farms, wineries and food producers give visitors plenty of reasons to stay for dinner.
If you’re asking what to do in Arizona in October, the short answer is: a lot.
What are the best things to do in Arizona in October?
The best October activities include visiting Sedona, seeing fall colors in northern Arizona, exploring the Grand Canyon, attending the Arizona State Fair, visiting pumpkin patches, hiking in cooler weather, exploring Arizona wine country, enjoying fall festivals, celebrating Día de los Muertos and taking scenic road trips.
Here are 30 ideas to put on your list.
1. Visit Sedona
October is one of the best times to experience Sedona.
The red rocks are spectacular year-round, but cooler weather makes hiking and exploring more enjoyable.
2. See the fall colors in Oak Creek Canyon
Arizona doesn’t immediately come to mind when people think of autumn leaves, which makes the experience even more surprising.
Late September through October can bring impressive color to higher-elevation areas around Sedona, Cottonwood and Camp Verde.
3. Explore Flagstaff
Head north and you’ll discover pine forests, mountain scenery and a completely different side of Arizona.
Flagstaff is one of my favorite places to experience the state’s seasonal transition.
4. Visit the Grand Canyon
October offers an excellent opportunity to explore the canyon without the intensity of the hottest summer months.
Walk the Rim Trail, visit several overlooks and give yourself time to simply take in the scale.
5. Attend the Arizona State Fair
The Arizona State Fair returns to Phoenix beginning October 1, 2026, running through November 1. The fair combines rides, food, entertainment, animals, exhibits and concerts.
And yes, I’m going to say it:
Go hungry.
A state fair is supposed to be fun.
6. Visit a pumpkin patch
Pumpkin patches are one of Arizona’s great October traditions.
Across the state you’ll find farms with pumpkins, corn mazes, hayrides, food and family activities.
7. Explore Mortimer Farms
The Dewey-area farm combines fall activities with agricultural experiences and a large corn maze.
It’s a good option for families looking for a full day rather than a quick pumpkin stop.
8. Visit Schnepf Farms
Queen Creek’s fall activities combine farm attractions, food, pumpkins and seasonal entertainment.
It’s exactly the kind of place where you should arrive with an appetite.
9. Go apple picking
Higher elevations give Arizona a surprisingly strong autumn agricultural season.
Visit an orchard and bring home something that didn’t come from a grocery-store shelf.
10. Explore Arizona wine country
October is an excellent month for a wine-country road trip.
Consider the Verde Valley, Sonoita or Willcox.
Pair the wine with a good meal and make a weekend of it.
11. Visit Prescott
Prescott’s elevation gives it a distinctly different October atmosphere.
Walk downtown, explore local restaurants and enjoy the surrounding forests.
12. Drive the Mogollon Rim
The Rim is one of the best places to appreciate Arizona’s changing elevations.
Bring lunch.
Find a viewpoint.
Stay for the scenery.
13. Attend a fall festival
Arizona embraces fall in its own way, with farm festivals, arts events, food celebrations and community gatherings.
14. Visit Slide Rock State Park
Slide Rock’s 2026 Fall Festival is scheduled for October 3 and celebrates autumn in Oak Creek Canyon with activities, demonstrations and family programming.

Arizona has its own Oktoberfest traditions, combining German-inspired food and entertainment with a Southwestern twist.
The 2026 calendar includes a 53rd Annual Oktoberfest on October 11.
16. Explore Tucson
October is a wonderful time to rediscover Tucson’s food and desert culture.
Make the meal part of the itinerary.
17. Visit Saguaro National Park
See the giant saguaros against a cooler autumn sky.
Plan hikes early and carry water.
18. Explore Bisbee
Bisbee is perfect for a fall road trip.
History, galleries, food and mountain scenery make it much more than a quick photo stop.
19. Visit Jerome
Explore the old mining town, browse galleries and have lunch overlooking the Verde Valley.
20. Take a desert sunset drive
Arizona’s sunsets are famous for a reason.
Find a safe viewpoint and let the light do the work.
21. Go stargazing
October’s cooler nights make stargazing particularly appealing.
Get away from city lights and give your eyes time to adjust.
22. Visit a farmers market
Fall is a great excuse to explore Arizona’s agricultural side.
Buy something you’ve never cooked before.
Then figure out how to cook it.
23. Eat Sonoran food
Arizona’s proximity to northern Mexico is a defining part of its food culture.
Order tacos, carne asada, fresh tortillas, chile-based dishes and whatever the local restaurant recommends.
24. Explore Native Arizona food traditions
Arizona’s culinary story goes far beyond modern Southwestern restaurants.
Seek out Indigenous-led experiences and learn about traditional ingredients and foodways directly from the communities preserving them.
25. Experience Día de los Muertos
October and early November bring cultural celebrations throughout Arizona.
These events can provide an opportunity to experience art, music, food and traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos respectfully and locally.
26. Visit the Arizona-Sonora border region
Southern Arizona provides an especially interesting window into the relationship between Arizona and northern Mexico.
27. Take a Route 66 road trip
Historic Route 66 gives travelers another way to experience Arizona’s small towns, diners and roadside culture.
28. Take the family hiking
Choose a trail appropriate for the weather, elevation and experience level.
October is a great time to get outside, but Arizona weather still deserves respect.
29. Plan a chef-driven dinner
If you’re visiting Arizona, make one dinner a destination.
Don’t just eat because you’re hungry.
Eat because the meal tells you something about the place.
30. Do absolutely nothing for an afternoon
Book a patio.
Order lunch.
Watch the desert change colors.
Sometimes the best Arizona activity is simply slowing down.
Is October a good time to visit Arizona?
Yes. October is generally one of the most appealing months for exploring Arizona, especially for outdoor activities and fall travel.
The key is remembering that temperatures vary dramatically by elevation.
Phoenix, Tucson, Sedona, Flagstaff and the White Mountains can feel very different on the same day.
What should I pack for Arizona in October?
Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and plenty of water.
If you’re traveling into northern Arizona, add warmer clothing for mornings and evenings.
Final word from Chef Joe
October is when Arizona starts showing off.
The desert cools down.
The mountains change color.
The farms become festive.
The restaurants get busy.
And suddenly you realize Arizona has a fall season—you just have to know where to look.
