One of the best things about living in or visiting Arizona is that you don’t need a week off to experience somewhere completely different.
Give me a car, a good playlist, a cooler and a reason to stop for lunch, and Arizona gives me plenty of options.
September is especially interesting because the lower desert can still be hot while higher elevations begin feeling much more comfortable.
That makes September an excellent month for day trips.
Here are 15 worth considering.
1. Sedona
Sedona is the classic Arizona day trip.
The red rocks, Oak Creek Canyon and surrounding trails make it easy to fill a day.
My advice?
Leave early.
Enjoy the scenery.
Have lunch.
And don’t try to cram twelve activities into eight hours.
2. Prescott
Prescott is a great option when you want cooler temperatures and a historic downtown.
Walk around the Courthouse Plaza, explore local shops and restaurants, then take a scenic drive before heading home.
3. Payson and the Mogollon Rim
If your idea of Arizona is cactus and desert, this trip will change your mind.
Drive toward Payson and the Mogollon Rim for pine forests, mountain scenery and spectacular overlooks.
4. Jerome
Jerome makes an excellent day trip for history lovers.
Explore the old mining town, browse galleries, have lunch and enjoy the views over the Verde Valley.
5. Cottonwood
Pair Cottonwood with Jerome or Sedona.
The Verde Valley offers food, wine, history and outdoor recreation.
It’s also a good place to slow down and eat.
6. Tucson
Tucson is a longer day trip from Phoenix, but it’s possible.
If food is the priority, I’d make the drive.
Tucson’s connection to Sonoran cuisine is one of the most compelling culinary stories in Arizona.
7. Superior and the Apache Trail region
The landscape east of the Phoenix metro area changes quickly.
This is a good choice for travelers who want desert scenery, mountains and a road-trip feeling without committing to a full weekend.
Always check current road and weather conditions before setting out.
8. Kartchner Caverns
For something completely different, explore underground Arizona.
Kartchner Caverns offers visitors a chance to see a living cave system rather than another desert overlook.
Reservations and tour availability should be checked before traveling.
9. Bisbee
Bisbee is a long day trip but a memorable one.
If you enjoy history, art, unusual architecture and independent restaurants, it’s worth the drive.
For a more relaxed experience, stay overnight.
10. Saguaro National Park
Tucson’s surrounding desert is spectacular.
Saguaro National Park is the place to appreciate the giant cactus that has become synonymous with the Sonoran Desert.
In September, plan outdoor activity carefully around the heat.
11. Flagstaff
Flagstaff is farther from Phoenix but offers a dramatic change in environment.
The elevation means cooler temperatures and forested landscapes.
If you want to escape the desert heat for a day, this is one of the better choices.
12. Oak Creek Canyon
You don’t necessarily need to spend the entire day in Sedona.
A scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon can be the main event.
Bring food, stop at overlooks and enjoy the changing landscape.
13. Lake Pleasant
If you don’t want to drive for hours, Lake Pleasant provides an easy outdoor escape from the Phoenix area.
Water activities, desert scenery and sunset make it a practical short getaway.
14. Cave Creek and Carefree
For a shorter trip, head north of Phoenix to Cave Creek and Carefree.
You’ll find desert scenery, restaurants, shops and a distinctly different atmosphere from downtown Phoenix.
15. The White Mountains
This isn’t the closest option, but if you’re determined to escape the heat, the White Mountains are worth considering.
Forest, elevation and mountain air can make it feel like you’ve left Arizona entirely.
What should you pack for an Arizona day trip in September?
Pack more water than you think you’ll need.
Wear sun protection.
Bring comfortable shoes.
Carry a light layer if you’re traveling to higher elevations.
And check the weather before leaving.
Arizona can change dramatically from one elevation to another.
My favorite day-trip rule
Pick one main destination and two smaller stops.
That’s enough.
The best day trips aren’t races.
They’re meals, roadside discoveries, viewpoints and conversations you didn’t plan.
That’s the Arizona I want people to experience.
